The New Year has just begun, I'm still penning my resolutions, and already I've fallen in love with 8 closet-refreshing trends. If clothes make the man [or woman], I plan to  explore my more creative and expressive side in 2013. From soft purple pastels on the runway at Chloe, to colorful metallics at Burberry, to emergence of flouncy floaty skirts over tighter minis and longer midis of yesteryear, here's the rundown on what's new and how to rock it with your closet staples.
  • A-line skirt: This classic shape is flattering to hips both curvy and slim. With the skater skirt, designers are focused on making it a staple in versatile leather and denim variations. Our favorite is Topshop's full skater skirt in black. For girls who want a longer length, this skirt hits the mark.
  • Booties: Of course you already own a pair of booties. And of course you want more pairs, especially a pair that works for now into Spring. Try a version with subtly sexy cutouts, like Topshop's Avril suede cutout boots in stone.
  • Metallics: Jackets, clothes and accessories have gone over the metallic rainbow, but don't think their too flashy for everyday. Try starting with a statement-making shoe like this Loeffler Randall silver oxford. Tip: try using it as a neutral when coordinating with other colors.
  • Stripes: Yes, stripes are back. But this time focus on eye-catching color combinations, like this cool black and white paneled jean from Rag & Bone. How to rock with your staples? Try mixing different striped pieces together the same way you mixed patterns in 2012.
  • Statement mini-bag: It's cute, and saves your outfit from being overly serious. And the fun is that a mini-bag doesn't have to match -- throw it on for the heck of it! I've got my eye on this vintage Chanel Double-C bag with the classic chain strap. Early birthday request, please!
  • Pointed Heels: Lucky Magazine's February cover girl, Katherine McPhee has me eyeing her pointed toe Laboutins in lemon yellow. I opted for this red patent leather pair by Guiseppe Zanotti. Tip: These look great paired with a pair of rolled boyfriend jeans.
  • Lavender: If you were watching Spring 2013 runways last Fall, then you know that Dior, Rochas and several fashion heavyweights walked pale shades of purple. We like Blu Moon's sweet u-back baby doll dress. Tip: Works perfectly the Avril suede cutout booties.
  • Mustard & gold: Adorn yourself with regal accents like these Auden Amelia II earrings at Shopbop. Also try the Adorn New York metal collection for more earrings, rings and bracelets in brushed and polished gold.
